At the start of each year, I've had students make simulated websites about themselves in either PowerPoint or Google Presentations. I want to demythicize the Web for the students and make them realize that it is simply connected pages of information. This year, students at WMS will make websites using either Weebly or Wix for use as a digital portfolio.
In addition, students will make informational websites in Google Sites, Wix, Weebly, and Glogster. I want them to have exposure to a variety of tools, with the understanding that the basic construction principals are essentially the same. However, though the building of the site is a good experience it will be of secondary importance. My primary focus will be to have the students develop good research skills, and then translate and present their information in a way that is understandable and engaging for their audience.
